Entrepreneurship is a journey filled with opportunities, risks, and challenges. There’s no universal manual for success, but one thing is certain: those who dare to be different hold a significant advantage. Stepping outside the norm, challenging established ideas, and creating new paths are what distinguish the successful from the rest. However, daring to be different requires courage, determination, and a willingness to forge your own way—even when faced with resistance.
At 63 years old, I bring a unique wealth of perspectives and experiences to the table. Through decades of work as an entrepreneur, consultant, and freelancer, I’ve learned the importance of daring to stand out. This article reflects on how this mindset has shaped my life and how it can inspire others to do the same.
Walking Your Own Path
Being different means questioning what’s considered “normal.” It can be as simple as adopting new technologies or taking on unconventional work methods. It can also involve saying “yes” to opportunities others consider impossible. I’ve often been told I’m “ten years ahead of my time,” a label I now wear with pride. For me, it’s never been about being rebellious but about finding solutions that work—even if they’re not popular at first.
One clear example is my early interest in AI. While many see technology as a threat or a passing trend, I saw its potential to revolutionize work processes. By integrating AI into my daily routines, I’ve saved time, reduced stress, and created new value for myself and my clients. Today, more people are embracing this technology, but I know I ventured into this territory long before it became mainstream.
The Courage to Say ‘Yes’
A recurring theme in my life has been my willingness to say “yes” to the unexpected and unknown. At several points, this courage has opened doors that might have otherwise remained closed. One of the most memorable examples is when I was asked to cook for 25 people on a ship, despite having no formal culinary training. My immediate reaction was, “Of course I can do it!” A week later, I found myself on a dock in Greenock, Scotland, preparing meals for an international crew. It was chaotic, educational, and incredibly transformative.
Similarly, at 62 years old, I decided to climb a mountain in the Pirin range in Bulgaria, despite being untrained and having a history of smoking. The physical and mental challenge proved that age is no barrier when you have determination and a belief in yourself.
Experience as an Asset
At 63, I’ve accumulated a treasure trove of experiences that younger entrepreneurs simply don’t have. My background as a drummer taught me the importance of discipline and teamwork. When I transitioned to project management, I applied these skills to coordinate complex events and collaborate with diverse teams. My six years living aboard a sailboat further instilled in me the value of self-leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability—qualities essential in entrepreneurship.
I view age as a strength. It provides perspective, patience, and a deeper understanding of what truly matters in both life and business. My experience allows me to trust my intuition and make decisions confidently, even when others are doubtful.
Challenging Norms
It’s easy to fall into the trap of doing things “the way they’ve always been done,” but true innovation happens when we dare to break these patterns. During my career in event production, I saw how the lack of structure and leadership often created inefficiencies. Instead of accepting this as a natural part of the industry, I chose to challenge and change these norms. I introduced new workflows and structures that made projects safer and more effective.
Embracing Change
Change is a constant in life, and those who can’t adapt risk stagnation. For me, change has always been a part of my journey, and I’ve learned not to fear the unknown. From living on a sailboat for six years to battling depression and starting fresh in Bulgaria, each shift has brought new opportunities for growth.
Moving to Bansko and starting over was not an easy decision, but it offered me the chance to explore new creative projects and discover a fresh direction in life. Change doesn’t have to be something to fear—it can be the beginning of something extraordinary.
Inspiring Through Action
One of the most rewarding aspects of daring to be different is seeing how it inspires others. At 63, I’ve begun lecturing on courage, transformation, and redefining life. I share my journey to show that it’s never too late to start over, to dare to say “yes,” and to create your own unique mark on the world.
My story of climbing mountains at 62, embracing AI to streamline my work, and living a life that defies convention has inspired others to believe in their own possibilities. By being authentic and sharing my experiences, I hope to motivate more people to take the leap.
Dare to Be Different
Daring to be different requires courage, determination, and a willingness to stand out. But the rewards are immense. When we dare to think differently, follow our own path, and use our unique experiences as strengths, we don’t just create successful careers—we build lives that are true to ourselves.
At 63, I look back on a journey filled with successes and challenges. I’ve learned that it’s never too late to create change and that age is never a limitation—it’s a strength. By daring to be different, we can all create something unique, inspire others, and leave a legacy that lasts long after we’re gone.
