I’m in Love with Sofia!

Published on 12 November 2024 at 08:32

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it happened, but somewhere along Sofia’s streets, I fell head over heels. The city captivated me with its history, its contrasts, and something unique in the air – a sense of both the past and the present coexisting. I often stay in the Oborishte area, a neighborhood that exudes sophisticated charm where old buildings meet small modern cafes and art galleries. It feels as though each street here carries its own story, its own rhythm.

Strolling Through Oborishte – A Connection to Daily Life

Oborishte has become an oasis for me, a place where I find peace and a sense of belonging, even though I am far from my Swedish hometown. There’s something special about this area – the older buildings retaining their charm, tree-lined streets offering shade, and small parks inviting a moment of rest. The streets are lined with cafes where it’s easy to sit down for a coffee and watch life roll by.

The area reminds me of Gothenburg in the 70s and 80s when things were simpler and more local. Here in Oborishte, the pace is relaxed, and the people are friendly and open, giving me the sense that time stands still, even as the city at large moves into a new era.

The Authority of Old Communist Buildings

It’s impossible not to mention Sofia’s monumental buildings, especially those that recall the grandeur of the communist era. Perhaps because they stand in stark contrast to the homely feel of Oborishte, these buildings are a palpable reminder of another time and ideology. They aim to convey power and control, and standing before them gives a sense of history’s presence. Here is a quiet yet unmistakable reverence for what these buildings symbolize, and for me, it’s a reflection on Bulgaria’s history and how the country has changed over time.

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – The Heart of Spirituality

Oborishte lies close to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a place I’m often drawn to. This cathedral is like a spiritual beacon in the heart of Sofia. Stepping through its doors feels like entering another world, where gold and icons create an atmosphere that feels timeless. The ambiance is reverent, and I find myself standing still, taking in the intricate art and the silence that embraces every wall.

The cathedral is more than just a religious landmark; it’s a symbol of Bulgaria’s soul. Each time I’m there, I feel my connection to Sofia deepen, and it becomes a sacred place for reflection.

The Metro – A Nostalgic Time Travel

Traveling by metro in Sofia feels almost like stepping back in time. For me, it’s an extension of the city itself – simple, functional, but full of personality. This is not a metro for tourists; it’s a metro for Sofia’s residents. Here, people from all walks of life travel together, from students to retirees, and riding with them is a reminder of the city’s diversity.

It often brings to mind Gothenburg of the past, a public transport system where the journey felt like a social space, a place for encounters and everyday connection. Sofia, with its intimate yet slightly worn transit network, has managed to capture that feeling, and each journey feels like a reminder of both the present and the past.

Sharing Knowledge and experience.
Lectures for Sofia’s Cultural Students...

My connection to Sofia is about to grow even deeper as I prepare to share my experiences and knowledge with young cultural students from the university. The prospect of giving lectures here excites me, especially as it means diving into my own journey of event organization and governance, developed and honed in Gothenburg.

These lectures are my way of contributing to the vibrant future I see for Sofia. With each class, I hope to offer insights from my years of managing and coordinating city events back in Gothenburg, from festivals to large-scale gatherings. The principles of organization, the importance of community, and the intricacies of governance in such events are all things I’m passionate about, and I look forward to passing that on to the next generation of cultural leaders in Sofia.

A New but Familiar Feeling

My love for Sofia is closely intertwined with my relationship to Oborishte. Here, I’ve found a balance between the traditional and the modern, a place where I feel as much at home as I do in Gothenburg. Oborishte is like a small universe in Sofia, where I can be both an explorer and a resident. The friendly people and the tranquil life here evoke memories of Gothenburg’s old charm and comfort.
